“This is Fiji. She was rescued from the streets of Cambodia seven years ago, and she doesn’t have any teeth. We spent an entire year together during the pandemic, living in a small room at the Hotel Abba on the Overtoom. It wasn’t an ideal situation, but she really seemed to enjoy it. She loved exploring the place and even became friends with the cat who lived at reception. More than once, I had to rescue her from climbing the trees around the rooftop. Cats really are free spirits—some people hate that about them, that they can’t be controlled, but they’ll always end up where they want to go.”
